A fellow BAPP friend has just produced a website that sets out her inquiry findings on how to motivate boys in dance classes. Its a great resource with something to interest both new and established teachers with links to a variety of information and video clips. It can be found here:
www.bettywells.weebly.com
I currently teach only a handful of boys and don't have more than one or two at a time within a mixed class. After visiting Betty's website I took a fresh look at the studio environment and my teaching strategies - some aspects I include (such as competition, short and active learning challenges) but music and environment feel like an area where improvement is needed (for example, I've not found one example of masculinity in the posters adorning the studio walls).
My conclusion? I will continue to develop and employ strategies that aim to motivate both the boys and girls in my classes but, using Betty's website as a learning resource, I can hopefully broaden my knowledge of motivating boys to include not just my approach but the learning environment as a whole.
